Congratulations! You found one of five easter eggs hidden throughout Dearly Devoted! In this hidden feature you will learn a little more about the thought process behind the layout (and matching wallpaper) featured on the site.
A lot of symbolism went into this to show Willow's journey. Present-day Willow radiates with magic as she sits and gives herself a reading with tarot cards, which are often used by Wiccans to give readings about one's life. She has her eyes closed and has an almost "at peace" look about her. She has come a long way. The cards on the table itself depict some of the moments along her magical journey. Their really small and upside down, but bonus points to anyone who can pick them all out. The 3 cards behind her represents her 3 biggest moments. Willow's 1st spell. The re-ensouling of Angel(us). Willow's darkest moment. Trying to end the world. And Willow's greatest moment in magic. The spell to awaken all the Slayers. The spell that took her Goddess Level.
In the Tarot deck, all three of these cards are in The Major Arcana. The Magician card means the mastery of the material world, creative action, self discipline and a willingness to take risks. An ability to recognise one's own potential, the power to initiate, communication and wit. Being as Dark Willow has her back to us in the card I took that to represent that this card was laid out in reverse. In which case the Death card would mean change that is both painful and unpleasant. A refusal to face the fear of change or change itself. Agonising periods of transition. Inertia. Lethargy. Mental, physical or emotional exhaustion. The High Priestess card stands for intuition, wisdom and secret knowledge, the feminine side of the male personality. Something remains yet to be revealed, but patience must be observed. Duality and mystery. Hidden influences affect both home and work and intuitive insight suggests new solutions. The influence of women. Each of these cards were picked to depict Willow's journey both for their names and their meanings.
The ruins are there as well for another magical fortune-telling symbol. And finally about the cat... I just finished a story recently set in Buffy Season 8 in which Tara was brought back as Willow's familiar (which usually takes the shape of a cat) and I thought that idea was kinda neat. So the cat is there to represent Willow's familiar and Tara's essence. Which to me just seemed to give the piece a certain bliss, as Willow comes full circle to where I see her today with Tara (in one form or another) still by her side.
